2019 PIKA PADDLES AND TRIPS 2019 PIKA Paddles V.4 March 14, 2019 Page 15 of 17 Yale to Hope (Continued) There are no pour-overs, and few midstream obstacles. (Unfortunately also no long green surfing waves). But there are large eddies, large boils, whirlpools, large wave trains, and currents of 6 to 8 knots. You can use any boat you are really comfortable in, but if your boat is a long racing machine, you will be working hard to just paddle straight down the middle and avoid all the rough stuff. The river volume is big enough that you are not likely to bang up your fibreglass boat, but you'll want to be a bit careful popping into shoreline eddies. The trip is dependent on water levels, but is almost always good at the end of September. Wet or dry suit and helmet required.
